The Wonders of Photoshop!

I think it is about time I let you in on some of my favorite photo editing tricks! I am by no means an expert when it comes to photography or photoshop, everything I know is self – taught. And I don’t have a super fancy camera, either – just a 4 mega pixel Canon PowerShot. But I AM fortunate to have Photoshop CS (through my husband’s work) and Photoshop Elements 2.0 (which came free with my Epson printer). Here are some tips and tricks using photoshop that I used when making the page below.

Photoshop Tips & Tricks:

  • I often follow the “Rule of Thirds” when I crop my photos.
  • If a photo looks too dark, I try the following steps: 1) Duplicate the layer 2) Set the blending mode for the new layer to “screen” 3) Adjust the opacity of the “screen” layer until the brightness looks better 4) Merge the “screen” layer with the original.
  • I always adjust the levels! Sometimes the auto adjust works, but I usually like to adjust it myself. Most of the time, I just move the arrows in on the left and the right, then slide the middle one around a little until I like the way everything looks.
  • I usually auto adjust the contrast.
  • Sometimes I can auto adjust the color, but it usually doesn’t work, so I have to fiddle around. My favorite methods are by adjusting the “color variations” and the saturation. But I’ve been known to try other adjustments as well.
  • Next, I LOVE to use virtual photographer filters! They are free to download, and there are TONS of different filters available! I usually duplicate my image layer, and try different filters until I find one I like. Then, I can adjust the opacity of that layer until the the level of the effect looks good. Then I can merge that layer down and start over using more filters or even blend modes. I always come up with lots of different versions of my photo to choose from once I start really playing around like this :).
  • I also like to use photoshop actions to create cool effects, like the antique photo effect I used on this page, by Michelle Coleman at littledreamerdesigns.com. Just do a google search for “free photoshop actions” and you will find plenty! There are also lots of great ones around to buy too :).

OK, there are more photoshop tricks I’d like to share, but that’s all for this post.  Enjoy!
