Photo Book Idea and a New Coupon

I finished my latest Shutterfly photo book! This is the first book I’ve made which does not include scrapbook pages or photos of people – it’s actually a collection of some of my favorite flower photos from the past few years, and I LOVE it!

You can click on the image below to virtually “flip through” the photo book:

Botanical Gardens Shutterfly Photo Book

I just can’t wait to see this new book in person! It is one of the new soft cover books available in the 8×8 size, which are more affordable but still allow you to customize the front and back covers and spine. I will take pics of it when it comes and let you know how it compares to the other styles I’ve tried. Speaking of which, I have posted my other Shutterfly photo books at my new Scrapbook Ideas share site, so now they are all available to flip through for ideas :) . Click here to check it out!

Do any of you have a Shutterfly site? If so, please share the link – I’d love to see your projects! These sites are really cool and easy to customize – I will be updating mine with more of my Shutterfly projects soon – feel free to add yourself as a member to my site if you want to be updated regularly :) .

Oh, and I also wanted to mention that I added a new coupon for a free collage poster or $5 off your Shutterfly purchase to the sidebar.  If you’re interested but you’re reading this via email or feed – you can click here to be taken to the site and get the coupon code :) .  Enjoy! ~xo Jess

* Update: people are asking some good questions in the comments section and I decided to put my answers right with the questions, so be sure to check them out below*

  1. Have you done books before with the spread going into the “gutter” (2-page spreads)? If so, did you have any problems with continuity across the spread? How did you create the 2-page layouts?

    Hi Liza,
Wow, I just realized that I’ve never designed a photo book like this before, with real two page spreads – I hope it turns out OK! To create the 2-page layouts, I downloaded the 8×8 Photoshop page templates provided by Shutterfly, then I checked the page size (7.95 x 7.95) and opened a new document in Photoshop with the dimensions 7.95 x 15.9. After I designed each 2-page layout I would flatten them, and crop each side to the 7.95×7.95 size and upload them to Shutterfly to be printed in the “Digital Scrapbooking” style book. ~xo Jess

  2. Oh, and I meant to say that your book is just gorgeous! Beautiful photos and layouts! Well done!

    Hehehe – THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ~xo Jess

  3. Hi Jess, your books are beautiful! You did an absolutely fabulous job on the flower book. And you took some real risks, lots of photos that stretch across the middle part where the pages come together. They look great in the preview, I’m anxious to find out how they’ll turn out in the real book. But if it’s a softcover, it will probably be okay. What’s your experience with that? I’ve only gotten one book from them, and I used their online design thing, rather than upload my own pages. I had a coupon for a free 8×8 book and it had a deadline, so I just did it with photos I had.

I’m working on making a family history book for my father, all genealogy stuff. There are only 3 pages up, though I’m almost finished with 2 more. It will be 20 pages 12×12 when it’s done.

Thanks for sharing your site, I finally went ahead and created one for myself. I’ve been meaning to do it for a while.

    Hi Melissa!
Thanks so much for the sweet comments and for sharing a link to your Shutterfly site, which looks great :) . I have no experience so far with the soft cover books OR the 2-page designs, so I guess I did take a lot of risks, huh? LOL! I’ll let you know what happens :) ! That family history book sounds wonderful! ~xo Jess

  4. Oh, I meant to ask, is there an expiration date for the coupon? When I click on the link, it just takes me to a sign-in page for Shutterfly, and when I sign in I still don’t see a coupon, so I assume I would just use the code you’ve listed in your sidebar, but I wonder when it expires?

Hi again :) . Yes, you need to enter the coupon code at check-out in order for it to work. The coupon is valid from now until September 9th, 2009. Enjoy! ~xo Jess

  5. Jess, that expiration date is FANTASTIC! I have 2 birthdays in September. I think I’ll get a poster print for my niece — have you ever gotten one of those? Only I want to make it a scrapbook page, not use one of their collage templates. It’s going to have her photos from each birthday, and the words to the poem “Now We Are Six” by A.A. Milne. And castles and crowns and unicorns and fairies and a glass slipper! Know any kits with unicorns and fairies?

Oh, and — I hope you didn’t think I meant it in a bad way when I said you took risks with your 2-page spreads. I think — are the softcovers stapled? — I’ll probably be fine, and you’ve gotten books from them before, at least, so you have more experience than I have. I’m going to play it safe with my family history pages, no edge effects and no elements near the edges or the gutter. I’ll take risks later after I see how that one turns out. :-)

Hooray!!! I have gotten a poster print in the past, but I think I actually used their format? I can’t quite remember… The birthday gift sounds soooo sweet! I don’t know of a kit like that, but I’m sure one must be out there. Maybe ask about it in the forums like DigiShopTalk.com or MyScrapbookArt.com, people will point you in the right direction! Good idea to play it safe on your books too – please don’t take any risks based on my choices LOL!!! ~xo Jess

  6. I love it! So beautiful. I’m going to love sitting with it and taking my time with each page. I’d love to go to the other gardens in addition to Huntsville.

    Love, Mom

Thanks, Mom! I can’t wait to visit these gardens with you too :) !! ~xo Jess

  7. [...] The Shutterfly book came! Once I take pics I will be back to show you . ~xo [...]
