Ideas for Valentine’s Day Scrapbook Pages

Happy February 1st, my friends :)! I LOVE Valentine’s day, and thanks to my Valentines, Hearts and LOVE board, on Pinterest, I have sooo many more great ideas for celebrating this year :)! We had lots of fun last year at Valentine’s Day too, here are a few digital scrapbook pages from my winter 2011 scrapbook using two of my freebies:  the So Flirty Kit and the papers included in the Printable Candy Boxes.

I did a little photo shoot with the kids in their “I Love Daddy” shirts before Valentines day, then on Valentine’s morning the kids wore the shirts to breakfast and gave the photos to their dad :). Later, we had a little family Valentine’s party – complete with red roses for me, from my loving husband :)! Hopefully, we’ll get to do something like that this year, too. What does your family do for Valentine’s Day?

How to Keep Up with Digital Scrapbooking

Can you believe it’s time for February already? I can tell 2012 is going to fly by!

I really want to try to stay caught up with my digital scrapbooking this year. Last year, I focused on “project 365″, taking at least one photo every day. That was wonderful, but it made keeping up with scrapbooking MUCH harder. Instead of one big scrapbook, I had to break it up into four – one for each season. So far, I have only completed the winter and fall books, so I’m basically 6 months behind schedule.

THIS year, I’m going to try something new: Project Scrap!

Free layout templates, encouragement and inspiration each month for the whole year. Two photos per week and two layouts (one double page spread) per month sounds totally doable (although, knowing me, there will be lots of extra pages added in)! Here are my layouts for the month of January (click here for credits):

~Tips and Techniques~

How to create custom shapes in Photoshop:

The original template for January had some adorable snowflakes on it, but we didn’t see any snow this month – just lots of rain! After deleting the cute little snowflakes from my template, I made some raindrops like this:

1. Create a new layer.

2. Select the custom shape tool (looks like a “blob” LOL), then at the top of the screen, there will be an option called “shape:”

3. Next to the “Shape:” option, click on the tiny arrow to reveal the different shape tools.

4. If there are only a few shape options, find the other tiny arrow at the top right corner of the shape pull-down menu and click that. In that menu, click “All”. This will give you all of the custom shapes – so many fun shapes to choose from :)!

5. I chose the raindrop shape.

6. Remembering to put each shape on a new layer, I drew some raindrops on my page by clicking and dragging the mouse to create various sizes . TIP: hold down the shift key while drawing if you want to keep the shape looking good – otherwise it might turn out stretched or squashed looking. By-the-way, you CAN draw all of the shapes on one layer, but you won’t be able to re-size and move the shapes individually that way.

7. Finally, I added some color and texture to my raindrops by layering digital papers over them in the same way you would for a template! TIP: If you’re not familiar with how to use digital templates and create clipping masks, check out this super helpful tutorial from the Shabby Shoppe: Creating Clipping Masks in Photoshop.
