Shutterfly Sales and FREE Photo Editing Software

Happy Monday everyone :)! For my USA readers, I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July holiday, we sure did! I posted a few pics of our fun weekend at my Lovely Lovely Things blog.  I just wanted to pop in to let you know about a couple of hot tips:

Summer Sales at Shutterfly

I found out that Shutterfly is having some great summer promotions where you can save up to 30% off on things like the photo books, prints and 18 month calendars! I put a link to the promotion in my sidebar  – sorry email subscribers, you will have to actually come to the site to access this ;). But hurry – the promotion only lasts until the 13th of July!

FREE Photo Editing Software

My sister Rebekah clued me in to this great photo editing software called Photoscape, which you can download onto your computer for free! She loves the fact that is is very simple to learn to use (unlike Photoshop, which she is a little overwhelmed by). I took a few minutes to check it out, and I love all the great features! Here’s an example of one of our weekend photos before and after a quick editing session with Photoscape:

Don’t get me wrong, I am not about to give up my Photoshop anytime soon, but for those of you who are interested in doing photo editing, but don’t have the time or budget for Photoshop – this could be the solution!

That’s all for now, hope your week is off to a great start :)!  ~xo Jess

We Have a Winner :)!

We are expecting a baby girl this time around – I’m also expecting lots of pink, flowery scrapbook pages in my future ;)

Now for the giveaway winner:

Your album is delightful! I love it! And the Nursery tales collection is beautiful.

Congrats Betty! I will be sending you a selection of papers and embellishments from the Nursery Tales collection, by Prima (available at Michael’s). Here are a few pics of what you can expect in the mail :)!

Happy December everyone :)! I’m home from my lovely Thanksgiving vacation, which was filled with the perfect mix of fun, excitement and relaxation with friends and family. Now I’m ready to get serious about making Christmas gifts and crafts!! I have a yummy cookie and a hot mug of coffee and there are some snow flurries outside my window – all putting me in the mood to cozy up to my craft table and start creating!! I enjoy making homemade gifts year round, but I always make more this time of year. If you’re looking for ideas, inspiration and tutorials for handmade scrappy gifts, decorations and crafts for the holiday season I hope you’ll join me here at Scrapbook Ideas – I have lots in store for you, including plenty of free projects ;)!!

Altered Keepsake Box from Prima Hybrid

Here’s a project to kick things off – a pretty, altered keepsake box :).

Altered Photo Box

Prima Hybrid has just released a bunch of beautiful new hybrid kits, and I was sent the Shades of Splendor kit to play with. This altered keepsake box is the first project I’ve made using the kit. It’s really fun to use coordinating digital and physical scrapbooking supplies together – what a cool concept :)! There are so many beautiful things included in this kit – I enjoyed layering these flowers and leaves, and since the flower centers are brads, everything is held in place perfectly! Gotta love all that glitter too :).

Altered Keepsake Box - Details

Since I’m in such Christmas-y spirits, I of course picked out mostly red and green pieces to decorate my keepsake box, but there are lots of ways this kit can be used, it’s not just for the holidays.

Here are the images of the kit as seen on the Prima Hybrid website:

Lots of gorgeous details, romantic pink and purple colors and fun to use embellishments!

I have a tutorial in the works for how to make the keepsake box, but I’m not allowed to share it just yet – so look for it in a future post :)! In the meantime, check out all of the fabulous kits at Prima Hybrid, I’m sure you will be inspired :)!

Lots to Share!

I know I have been away from Scrapbook Ideas a lot lately, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy creating :)! I have lots to share with you over the next few days, so I hope I will have time to post as often as I’d like. So let’s get right to it, shall we?

New Collection and Sale at Vera Lim Design

Firstly, I wanted to tell you about an awesome new collection by Vera Lim, called A Walk Down Memory Lane. It is huge: 5 paper packs and 5 element packs, and they are ALL on sale until the end of today!!

I have been a big fan of Vera’s gorgeous designs ever since I met her through Prima Hybrid. She has a unique style all her own, which features lots of bold colors and patterns (plus some soft and sweet kits thrown in every now and then), fun and inventive elements, and fantastic grunge that somehow still looks more pretty than messy :).  I love her ability to mix realistic, 3D looking elements in with doodles and other more traditional digi style embellishments.

So, you can imagine how thrilled I was when Vera gave me opportunity to play with the beautiful kits in her newest collection!! Yippee!!! I love them soooo much and I could seriously scrap for days and days with them :). My favorite thing about all of these kits is that they are filled with really cool elements – I especially love all of the whimsical trees and birds. Here’s a page I made using pieces from all five of the kits:

ETA: This is actually a picture of my sister with Gabe, which I LOVE! He doesn’t get to see her much, because she lives so far away. But that could change in the not too distant future….

Digital Techniques:

Here’s my technique for the word art layered over the cloud element:

  1. I duplicated the word art layer. I changed the color of the new layer to a light yellow (originally black), which I had picked up from her shirt.
  2. I positioned the cloud element behind the word art layer and selected the pixels of the cloud layer.
  3. I switched to the yellow word art layer and deleted the selected pixels. This makes the word art inside the cloud appear dark in color, while the rest is yellow.
  4. Using a green color picked up from the grass, I recolored the original (black) word art, then I changed the blend mode of this layer to “color burn”. Lastly, I duplicated this layer and reduced the opacity to 65%.

Here’s my technique for the glitter overlay, which looks great as-is, but I felt like tweaking it anyway :):

  1. I placed Vera’s glitter overlay over the inner scrapbook paper, and I changed the blend mode to “linear dodge”.
  2. Then I duplicated the glitter layer and changed the blend mode of the top layer to “screen”, and lowered the opacity to 34%.
  3. The only other thing I did was to erase little bits of each of the glitter layers to create some variation and to remove the glitter from the area over the photo.

Faithbooking Article at The Daily Scrapper

I also wanted to let you know that I have a new article about faithbooking in the current issue of The Daily Scrapper :)! I am really enjoying working with this publication – every issue is bursting with ideas and inspiration for digital and hybrid scrappers, and the best part is that it is totally FREE! Speaking of free, be sure to check out the freebie section which has new goodies with each release :).

Shabby Miss Jenn Featured at DST

Finally, as most digi scrappers know by now, the featured designer this month at DigiShopTalk.com is one of my favorites: Shabby Miss Jenn!!! Even though I had already left her creative team by the time she was featured, she was sweet enough to let me scrap one more page for her using this fantastic kit, Harvest Road! The kit is available to DST members for the month of October. Here’s the layout I made with these yummy fall goodies:

Tip: I wanted to cover the letters of the word “patch” with a piece of plaid scrapbook paper from the kit, but the letters in the kit have built-in shadows, which I didn’t want to cover up. I used the quick selection tool (PSCS3) to select just the letters, but not the shadows, then I created a new layer and filled the selection with black. I used this new shape to clip the plaid paper, so the shadow is still visible behind it.

OK, that’s it for today, but please check back soon for some SUPER exciting news I can’t tell you about yet ;)!

September Bella Scraps Magazine!

Wow, I love the latest issue of Bella Scraps! I can’t believe how much scrappy goodness can be crammed into just 97 pages! This issue is filled with gorgeous layouts, tons of articles and tutorials and there were lots of extra downloads in there too, in addition to the two free featured designer kits :). I especially {heart} the letter press stamps by Bren Boone! Here’s the magazine preview (click to purchase):

I am also sooooo super excited to announce that Holley has invited me to be a regular contibuter!! My first article for Bella Scraps appeared in this issue (on pages 52 & 53) – woohoo :)!! Also, I just wanted to point out that I somehow forgot to give Holley the layout credits for the images that go with the article. So here they are: Photo Books by Shutterfly; Ultimate baby Album – Prince (piece-a-cake page) and elements from Our Little Prince by Shabby Princess (first image); storyboard (slightly modified) by Lanne and Cherrywood Farm paper by Shabby Miss Jenn (second image).

Here’s a page I made with Ben Boone’s downloads from this issue:

I love these photos of Gabe with his Grandma (“Nina”), they had so much fun exploring together this summer :)! Hope you’re having a great week :).

The Latest from Shabby Miss Jenn!

Check out what’s new at Shabby Miss Jenn Designs – you’re going to LOVE these new kits :)! Here are a few pages I made with her newest goodies:

Credits: Art Class, by Shabby Miss Jenn. I have soooo many photos I can use this awesome new kit for! I also used a worn photo overlay by Something Blue Studios. Fonts: Eraser and High Strung.

Credits: Spiced Apple Collab, by Shabby Miss Jenn and Paint the Moon (Annie Manning). Photo overlay by Something Blue Studios. Font: 1942 report and Vintage Press (by Fontologie).

Oooooo, I love this great collab kit, and it was so cool to work with some things by Annie too. A few people requested a shadowing tutorial when they saw this page in the SMJ gallery, so I will do my best to put one together and post it here soon.

Oh, and I thought I’d just mention this in case you haven’t already noticed the changes in my creative teams list – I have recently stepped down from being on Shabby Princess and Shabby Miss Jenn’s Creative Teams. Of course you all know how much I completely ADORE these two ladies and their work, and I will forever be a MAJOR fan – but I have some new projects I’m working on, which I’d like to devote more time to. It was such a huge blessing and a real honor to be involved with these awesome teams, and I know we will still be in touch :)!

That’s all for right now, I will be back soon with more updates!
