I Love Digital Scrapbook Templates!

I went from way behind schedule to almost caught up in a couple of days! Seriously, if it weren’t for shortcuts like photo books and templates, I would feel totally overwhelmed trying to keep up with my scrapbooking :)! Now I just need to do the April layout, and I will be back on schedule with Project SCRAP. If you haven’t joined in, you really should – the free templates are wonderful, and the encouragement and inspiration from the Shabby Princess team and other scrapbookers will help keep you motivated :)!

How to Keep Up with Digital Scrapbooking

Can you believe it’s time for February already? I can tell 2012 is going to fly by!

I really want to try to stay caught up with my digital scrapbooking this year. Last year, I focused on “project 365″, taking at least one photo every day. That was wonderful, but it made keeping up with scrapbooking MUCH harder. Instead of one big scrapbook, I had to break it up into four – one for each season. So far, I have only completed the winter and fall books, so I’m basically 6 months behind schedule.

THIS year, I’m going to try something new: Project Scrap!

Free layout templates, encouragement and inspiration each month for the whole year. Two photos per week and two layouts (one double page spread) per month sounds totally doable (although, knowing me, there will be lots of extra pages added in)! Here are my layouts for the month of January (click here for credits):

~Tips and Techniques~

How to create custom shapes in Photoshop:

The original template for January had some adorable snowflakes on it, but we didn’t see any snow this month – just lots of rain! After deleting the cute little snowflakes from my template, I made some raindrops like this:

1. Create a new layer.

2. Select the custom shape tool (looks like a “blob” LOL), then at the top of the screen, there will be an option called “shape:”

3. Next to the “Shape:” option, click on the tiny arrow to reveal the different shape tools.

4. If there are only a few shape options, find the other tiny arrow at the top right corner of the shape pull-down menu and click that. In that menu, click “All”. This will give you all of the custom shapes – so many fun shapes to choose from :)!

5. I chose the raindrop shape.

6. Remembering to put each shape on a new layer, I drew some raindrops on my page by clicking and dragging the mouse to create various sizes . TIP: hold down the shift key while drawing if you want to keep the shape looking good – otherwise it might turn out stretched or squashed looking. By-the-way, you CAN draw all of the shapes on one layer, but you won’t be able to re-size and move the shapes individually that way.

7. Finally, I added some color and texture to my raindrops by layering digital papers over them in the same way you would for a template! TIP: If you’re not familiar with how to use digital templates and create clipping masks, check out this super helpful tutorial from the Shabby Shoppe: Creating Clipping Masks in Photoshop.

Free Printable Candy Box Crafts

Here are some last-minute crafts you can make this weekend – just in time for Valentine’s Day!!

I whipped up the printable candy boxes this afternoon with some papers I had designed recently. They are by no means perfect, you can kinda see the fold lines etc, but they are still fun to make. I also included one without the message box plus a .png template and a plain .jpg template so you can create your own if you like too! Oh, and I stuck 3 pink papers in there too :)!! If you are new to printable crafts, just ask your questions in the comments section and I will try to answer them asap :)!

CLICK HERE to see the folder with all three downloads inside :).

Now, THESE are the printables designed by Kelleigh Ratzlaff the PRO printable designer, so you can rest assured that they will not be flawed like mine :). PLUS she has some pointers in there to help you along the way. If you love her work and hybrid projects in general, you will want to go see her in action along with all of the other talented ladies at The Hybrid Chick.

And last, but not least is the free candy bar wrapper by Brooke from Oregon, which I offered here a few years ago, but might be new to some of you!

Digital Quick Pages and Templates for Christmas Photos!

If you’re anything like me, you took many, MANY great photos during the holidays and you have yet to scrapbook most of them. Here we are at the end of January, and I still haven’t finished going through all my Christmas photos yet! Granted, this Christmas was extra special. Actually, I’m pretty sure, far as I can remember, it was my best Christmas EVER :)! So I did take tons of pics. Anyway, I meant to share these before Christmas, but I got caught up in the excitement of fun holiday happenings and getting ready for lots of family coming into town. I’m sure there are at least a FEW of you out there who might be needing some quick pages to help finish up scrapbooking your Christmas pics, and if not you can save these up for next year :). They all coordinate with the Christmas Heart kit and other freebies that came with it. Enjoy!

Fall Fun Digital Scrapbooking Kit {FREE!}

Hello Scrappy Friends :). I just LOVE autumn, don’t you? To me it means lots of happy family times spent outdoors enjoying the beauty of God’s creation and the excitement and anticipation of the holiday season, which is just around the corner – believe it or not! I have been blogging about the fun fall memories my family has been making (plus our recent trip to Hawaii with the two little kids) at our family blog: Lovely Lovely Things please stop by and say hi :)!

Anyway, I was making a sort-of digital scrapbook page for my blog when I realized that I had several fall-ish digital scrapbook kits from when I used to sell them which are just hanging around on my computer – so I decided to put some things together for a freebie :)!

This freebie is a hodgepodge mix of some new things, some things from old kits, and some old things which I played around with to make new again :). I hope you like it! ~xo Jess

Where’s Jess?

Hi everyone :)! Just wanted to drop in and say thanks SO MUCH for your encouragement and support as I have been trying my hand at designing!!! I appreciate you all more than you know – and I want to say a sincere and heartfelt THANK YOU for purchasing my first kits!! Now that the block party at CRD is over, my kits are no longer available at this time… but I have enjoyed designing so much that I am pretty sure you can expect to see more from me in the future ;)!!!

Inside the ScrapArtist Studio with Amanda RockwellSome friends recommended this awesome class by Amanda Rockwell – so I used some of my earnings to sign up. I’m so glad I did!! It is well worth the money because you get tutorials, a forum where you can learn from other designers, and TONS of great “commercial use” downloads! I know several of you are now designing too – so I wanted to make sure you heard about this cool resource. If you sign up, make sure you tell Amanda your forum username – because that will get you quicker access. And please let Amanda know I sent you :)! Hope to see you there!

In the meantime there are always the hybrid projects, quick pages and templates I have for sale still at Christina Renee Designs and Weeds and Wildflowers – but those will be going away at the end of the year to make room for the new in 2009!

New Release at CRD (and Freebie)

It has been pretty busy around here lately! We had a wonderful anniversary – thanks for all your well-wishes :)!! I don’t have much time for blogging right now, but I did want to pop in to tell you that I have a new template set at Christina Renee Designs, which is 30% off today – what a steal :)!!

(click to purchase)

I also thought it would be fun to put together a word art set from the Bible verses I used in my Autumn in New England memory book. They are perfect for fall scrapbook pages – I hope you enjoy them!

As You Wish Designs

Hey everyone! How was your weekend? I had a wonderful long weekend celebrating the Fourth of July with my husband and son. Now I’m all rested up and ready to get the week off to a great start :)! The first order of business is to tell you about a new digital designer: Janet, of As You Wish Designs!! Janet has been a familiar face around DigiShop Talk for quite some time, so it was fun to see her join the world of designers recently when she set up shop at Shabby Pickle Designs. And I was totally thrilled when she sent me a gift certificate to her new store (thanks girl)!!!! It took me forever to decide what to pick up, her store is filled with such beautiful things! I love her bright, bold colors and patterns, so I just had to make some extra bold pages!

Photoshop Tips and Tricks

  • To make the pocket look “full” I used the burn tool around the outer edges to darken them a bit and the dodge tool in the center to make a highlight (I also duplicated the pocket layer and set the blend mode to color dodge (43% opacity), but that was just to make it look funky ;).
  • I used the overlay blend mode on the word “Joy” to make it look like it was part of the pocket.
  • There are tons of other blend modes in use for all of the text and most of the other elements of the page as well – no particular method, I just played around until I liked the look :)!

Photoshop Tips and Tricks

  • This page came together SO quickly, because I used this great template by Michelle Filo (I have seen TONS of pages using this one, but I figure the world of digital scrapbooking can hold at least one more LOL).
  • To add a little extra interest to the title, I alternated between smaller and larger font sizes for the word “sandbox”.
  • As usual, I played around with blend modes for all of the text. Don’t forget that to try changing the font colors as you experiment with the blend modes will create even more effects :).

————————————————————————————

I’ve really enjoyed working with these As You Wish Designs! And I haven’t even had a chance to try the great alphas I picked up from her store (I especially like the Ephemera Bets). If you like what you have seen so far you should definitely take a look at the rest of Janet’s store, she has a great sale going on – everything is 30% to 50% off :)!!!
