Photography Tips and 50% Off Photo Books

Happy Monday! Just wanted to pop in and let you know about some GREAT sales going on – then I need to get back to “work” I am trying to finish a bunch of photo projects and get them all ordered before these sales end! This is especially hard to do when my only chance to work on them is when the kids are asleep :).

Firstly: I answered some photography and photo editing questions today and linked to some other related posts I wrote on my blog Lovely, Lovely Things.

Plus: My favorite photo gift site, Shutterfly is having an awesome sale right now – up to 50% off on photo books, free shipping on orders of $30 or more and 20%-30% off on lots of other photo gifts! I’m planning on getting at least $30 worth of the 50% off photo books so I can get the free shipping (and get a head start on Christmas gift making too)! Sale ends 11/03/10.

Finally: Snapfish has a couple of great sales going on too – 50% off several of their photo gifts, and 100 free 4×6 prints with the purchase of two 8x10s. I am making a 12×12 calendar for 50% off and I plan on getting the free prints too – since we just got back from a vacation in Hawaii and I have lots of scrapbooking to do :)! Sale ends 11/02/10.

Oh, and there is another way to get free prints at Snapfish too – if you sign up for their Merry Deal Reveal newsletter you will get 20 free prints plus extra coupon codes in your email starting Nov 15th. I took advantage of a lot of these deals last year – photo gifts for all Ho Ho Ho ;).

Have fun – I’m off to work on my little projects before the kiddos wake up :)!

Fall Fun Digital Scrapbooking Kit {FREE!}

Hello Scrappy Friends :). I just LOVE autumn, don’t you? To me it means lots of happy family times spent outdoors enjoying the beauty of God’s creation and the excitement and anticipation of the holiday season, which is just around the corner – believe it or not! I have been blogging about the fun fall memories my family has been making (plus our recent trip to Hawaii with the two little kids) at our family blog: Lovely Lovely Things please stop by and say hi :)!

Anyway, I was making a sort-of digital scrapbook page for my blog when I realized that I had several fall-ish digital scrapbook kits from when I used to sell them which are just hanging around on my computer – so I decided to put some things together for a freebie :)!

This freebie is a hodgepodge mix of some new things, some things from old kits, and some old things which I played around with to make new again :). I hope you like it! ~xo Jess

My Photo Book Ideas PLUS Free Greeting Cards

Hi Friends! I’m so excited to get caught up with you after taking a little break ;). Things seem to be calming down a bit around my house and I am finding more and more time for crafty projects these days – yippee!!

I’ve made some great Shutterfly photo books I’d love to share with you – just click on the image of the book to be taken to my Shutterfly share site if you want to peek inside :).

This Creating Keepsakes pre-made scrapbook called The ABCs of You turned out to be a super fun birthday gift for Gabe – and it was easy to put together too! TIP: There are several extra layouts available to add to this book, in case you want more than one page for some letters.

Here is the HUGE 12×12 Memory book I put together with all my favorite photos from 2009. I was short on time (during the holidays, with a new baby) so I just used Shutterfly’s classic everyday layout style which really put the focus on my photos. TIP: To give my photo book a beautiful, yet simple cover, I uploaded a digital scrapbook paper by Shabby Princess to my Shutterfly album to use as my custom photo cover!

This is one of my favorite photo books – I made digital scrapbook pages using Photoshop and a beach-themed kit by Shabby Miss Jenn, then I uploaded them to make a Shutterfly Digital Scrapbook!

I also made three photo books about our trip to England last fall to send as gifts. The great thing about making photo books through Shutterfly is that once you make a book, it is saved in your account so you can easily order duplicates or even save a book as a new project and make changes to customize the book for a specific person, as I did for my England trip memory books.

Last but not least, I wanted to share some real – life photos of another Shutterfly book I made a while back.

I had promised to share pics of what the finished product looked like with my digital layouts which spanned the gutter (where the pages meet in the center at the binding). Here are a few examples:

I created these layouts in Photoshop as one continuous image, then split it into two pages, which I uploaded into Shutterfly and added to the photo book.

As you can see, some of the image gets lost in the center where it folds into the binding, which is why you shouldn’t put key text or images in that area.

I think in these examples, though, it is worth losing a little of the image to have the effect of a large image spanning the two pages – I was happy with the result!

Shutterfly has a 20% off sale on photo books going on right now, along with lots of other great deals, including three free greeting cards (use this coupon code: SUMMERCARDS by September 1st). Here are the custom cards I just ordered :)!

Well, it’s GREAT to be getting back into scrapbooking – I have tons of wonderful new photos to use so I hope to be blogging much more often! Please leave a comment to say “hi”, I can’t wait to hear from my fellow scrapbookers – I miss you :)!!

Sharing the Love! {freebie}

Hello fellow scrapbookers! Just popping in to say a BIG THANKS for allowing me to take a much needed break from this site for the past few months :). So many wonderful things have happened since I last posted; including my dad’s retirement, some of my family relocating to a home less than 10 minutes away (from across the country), our new baby girl being born, a trip to England, folks visiting for the holidays and my husband completing his Master’s Degree to name a few… You can see more a more thorough update (plus photos) at my blog, Lovely Lovely Things.

Below is a digital scrapbook page I just whipped up for the fun of it ;).  Now that things are starting to calm down a bit, I can hopefully have more time for scrapbooking! In fact, I have been doing some fun projects lately, so I’d love to share them with you as soon as I get a chance.

Speaking of sharing, I thought I’d pass along this little freebie :). It’s a love themed mini digital scrapbook kit I made last year for sale, but since I am not designing/selling kits these days I can offer it here for free :)! Just click the image below to be taken to an online folder with the three download links. Have fun!

Shutterfly Sales and FREE Photo Editing Software

Happy Monday everyone :)! For my USA readers, I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July holiday, we sure did! I posted a few pics of our fun weekend at my Lovely Lovely Things blog.  I just wanted to pop in to let you know about a couple of hot tips:

Summer Sales at Shutterfly

I found out that Shutterfly is having some great summer promotions where you can save up to 30% off on things like the photo books, prints and 18 month calendars! I put a link to the promotion in my sidebar  – sorry email subscribers, you will have to actually come to the site to access this ;). But hurry – the promotion only lasts until the 13th of July!

FREE Photo Editing Software

My sister Rebekah clued me in to this great photo editing software called Photoscape, which you can download onto your computer for free! She loves the fact that is is very simple to learn to use (unlike Photoshop, which she is a little overwhelmed by). I took a few minutes to check it out, and I love all the great features! Here’s an example of one of our weekend photos before and after a quick editing session with Photoscape:

Before:

After Editing with Photoscape:

Don’t get me wrong, I am not about to give up my Photoshop anytime soon, but for those of you who are interested in doing photo editing, but don’t have the time or budget for Photoshop – this could be the solution!

That’s all for now, hope your week is off to a great start :)!  ~xo Jess

Handmade Baby Shower Cards

Looking for new ways to use your scrapbooking supplies? How about some handmade cards :)! I always save paper scraps left over from my scrapbooking projects to use later for cards, mini albums and other projects. These My Mommy and Me papers, by Prima were the perfect thing for some Baby Shower cards I made recently (as seen on the Prima blog).

Handmade Baby Shower Card Ideas

Handmade Card Making Tips

  • Stretch your paper scraps by cutting out paper design elements and using them to embellish your card front (like the flowers on the first card, and the turtles on the second).
  • Mix and match papers from one or more paper collections for a more exciting design.
  • Use a square or circle punch to instantly crop out cute sections of patterned paper, then create a mosaic out of them (you can download the free card template here).

A Little Giveaway and a Mini Album Idea

I finally finished my most recent mini album! As I mentioned earlier, I had gone to Michael’s to pick up some of the goodies from the Nursery Tales Collection by Prima.  I got some great deals because I had a 30% off your entire purchase coupon and I also went back on another day to use a 40% off coupon for the paper pack.

Want to see what I bought?

Nursery Tales Collection by Prima

As many of you know, I am expecting a new baby in September, so I was thrilled to see this new collection!! The timing couldn’t have been more perfect too because I wanted to make a mini album just for Gabe and the Nursery Tales Collection worked wonderfully for this project.

Mini Album Idea for Older Siblings

My son Gabe will be turning three just before we expect his new little sibling to be born. We have been trying to prepare him for our new arrival and get him excited about the new addition to our family. I want him to feel like he is a big part of what is going on. Gabe loves books, but I had been having a hard time finding one that I thought was really sending him the right message. Then it hit me, Gabe LOVES to look through all of my mini albums – why not make him his very own mini album about his early days as a newborn? I used photos from Gabe’s first few days to show him what life with a newborn baby is like.

I love this idea because it accomplishes at least three goals:

  • Help the sibling learn about everyday life with a newborn by sharing photos of bathing, changing, feeding, sleeping, cuddling and even crying.
  • Use photos of the sibling as a baby, so that they can see that they were once a newborn and were cared for in the same ways.
  • Give the sibling a special mini album of their very own – Gabe loves his even more than I expected him to!

I used a 5×5 Accordion Album, which also comes with its own keepsake box – too cute :)! Here are some pics of the finished box:

And a close-up one so you can see the adorable mini roses and beautiful flocked paper:

Here’s the front of the album – I love the rub-ons in this collection!

I love the little bunnies too :)!

Now for some pics of the inside of the album – awww, was he really ever that little?

I love that the album has built in pockets and frames – it really is the perfect thing for a preschooler! Plus, you can add extra photos on the backs of the tags.

What a great photo for the last page ;).

Tips and Tricks for Mini Albums for Kids

  • I used the distressed look, with rough, inked edges – that way, if the book suffers some wear and tear at the hands of my preschooler, it won’t be as noticeable.
  • I attached clear transparency sheets over each of the photos to protect them from little finger prints.
  • I made double-sided tags for all of the pockets in the album, making it more interactive and fun for young viewers.

Still with me? How about that giveaway :)! Leave me a comment on this post with your guess about the color scheme of the new baby’s nursery… PINK or BLUE? In a couple of days I will randomly choose somebody from the winning group of answers to receive a special sampling of the Nursery Tales papers and embellishments :)! P.S. If you are a friend or family member who already knows, please keep it our little secret for a few more days, OK? ~xo Jess

Real Love Mini Kit {and freebie}

Happy Friday everybody! I hope you had a great week and are ready for the weekend :)!! I don’t know about you, but I am really looking forward to Valentine’s Day  – what could be sweeter than a whole day dedicated to LOVE? It is with this in mind that I have put together my new mini kit: Real Love – It is on sale for just $2 right now!

Real Love Mini Kit by Jess Gordon

My inspiration for this kit is a passage from the Bible:

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-8a (NIV)

You will find these words incorporated into the design of some of the papers in the kit, and of course, most of the elements are meant to communicate a major message of LOVE :)! Although you can’t miss the bold pinks and lavender colors here, you will also find plenty of neutrals too – for those non-girly pages ;).

And of course I have a little freebie for you to coordinate with this kit! Enjoy :)!!
